The Iberia African American Historical Society Archive of History, Heritage, and Culture
The Iberia African American Historical Society was founded in 2017 to research the long and rich history of African Americans in Iberia Parish; to educate the public through community talks, publications, and outreach; to commemorate that history through the installation of historical markers and the implementation of public programming; and to preserve local sites that mark the presence and contributions of African Americans in the parish.
At the heart of this work is the IAAHS Center for Research and Learning, which fosters a sense of community by establishing a dedicated place to collect, preserve, and share the true and inclusive history of both historical and present-day Iberia Parish. The Center serves as a space where community memory, descendant knowledge, and lived experience are valued as essential historical sources.
The Center for Research and Learning fulfills its mission through robust community engagement and the acquisition and digitization of records, objects, photographs, and oral histories that reflect the inclusive history of the parish. These materials are stewarded through an archive that is intentionally accessible both physically and virtually, ensuring that local history remains available for learning, research, and intergenerational connection.
